Weekly Update 2nd September 2022

The weekend starting with some rapid action as athletes from Wolverhampton & Bilston AC took the short journey north for the Mid Cheshire 5k. Advertised as one of the fastest 5k road races in the country this attracted some top quality athletes and our club members found themselves rubbing shoulders with some international class runners. It was a great, if scary, experience and those brave enough to take part came away with some impressive times.

Owen Ulfig was fastest for the club on the night coming home in 50th place in 15.22, Pravesh Patel was 61st in 15.29, Louie Lambeth finished in 15.36 in 75th, Tyler Hawley was 116th in 16.06, Isobelle Jones ran the 2nd fastest 5k ever for a U17 year old finishing in 16.14 in 133rd overall, only a second of Kate Avery’s British record. Sam Thursfield was 171st in 16.38, Louise Hackett was 191st and 2nd in her age group in 16.53, Steve Ulfig ran an impressive 17.29 in 257th place, Darren Owen-Jones was 330th in a frustrating 18.03, Ava Kind was 387th in 19.10, Nick Beach was 399th in 19.17 and Scarlett Willoughby was 507th in 21.53.

Lucy Horton was the club’s sole representative in the Charnwood Open track meeting racing over 800 metres, crossing the line in 2.39.87. We had a couple of club members at the Ellesmere 10k with Jack Pickett finishing runner up in 32.40 and Peter McCullagh was 101st in 48.20. Amelia Hancock went north to York to throw things taking part in the Valhalla Throws Event, she posted the furthest throw in pool B of the hammer recording a distance of 43.50m. And Finley Powell took part in the England Athletics U15 Championships in Bedford, finishing in 9th with a leap of 1.58. Fin has had a difficult and disjointed year with injury and will hope to improve on this next year. Finally, a small group travelled the short journey to Albrighton for  the Cosford Spitfire 10k with Dave Lewis finishing off a long pre marathon warm up by racing the last 6 miles bringing them home in 40.51 to take 31st place, Sarah Thurley finished in 35th place in 41.42 to take the 3rd female prize, Stephen Green was 114th in 48.25, Lionel Spittle was 130th in 49.21 finishing 2nd in his age group and according to the results Arwie P, a member of Wolverhampton & Bilston, was 361 in 57.37. We’ll be interested to know who this was.
